More write-up about the installation by Nike Stadium:

Flyknit Multiply is an inaugural interactive installation for the Nike Festival of Sport (FOS) in Shanghai. It brought together visual arts, new technology and community expression and took this confluence to a new level. Inspired by the Nike Flyknit shoe, the real-time installation utilized bespoke digital computer codes, elegant analog descriptors and architecture spatial design to inspire unique real time portraits.

We created the installation with a room-length trampoline, a real-time playback screen and a 10 meters 15′ curved LED wall and Nike Flyknit shoes for trial. Making use of Microsoft Kinect camera for body movement tracking, all these elements combined to shape a visionary digital interactive installation design.

Installation is networked to the Internet and every jump will generate a unique knit-style portrait video. The algorithm of the generative design is inspired by the technology of the Nike Flyknit shoes. It will then render in .gif format and then upload to the Nike game-on-world website. Finally, it will be available for sharing in social media platform like Weibo and Facebook.

At the Nike FOS, the installation creates an interactive shoe trialing and interactive experience for the 185,000 sports enthusiasts who visited the grounds. Global superstars Lebron James, Rudy Gay, Amar’e Stoudemire, Eric Koston, Zhang Xi and Xue Chen, and entertainers Blackie Chen and Godfrey Gao were among the throngs who experienced the installation.

Shang Da Ren is an interactive performance project combining technology, dance and Chinese calligraphy. The performance is created for the opening of the TaiChung Calligraphy Greenway where it is right outside the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

In the project, we are trying to combine the tension of the dancer’s movement as a writing medium and to present the spirit of the Chinese Calligraphy.

We use the flexible stretch sensor and lilypad in the wearable device part. It is good for capturing data from the dancer.

Another part of the performance would be combing the robotic writing and dancer’s gesture. Thanks for the piccolo team for this opensource CNC drawbots hardware. Mr. Tiago Rorke in the piccolo team send us the laser cut files and lead us the way to build this little drawing machine. More about their projects please refer to their diatom studio website: http://diatom.cc/ They do a lots interesting projects!

And then, we developed our software part for writing Chinese Character. If you know this Chinese words, you know what we are saying

Our approach is to write as human as the robot can and we did it.

We collaborated with a Taiwan’s choreographer Kao Yung-Yu for the performance.

Some snaps for the work and here is a short excerpt:

We met another NY artist Gabriel Pulecio on the train and his installation work with inflatable object and visual mapping.

The festival was giving out 2 nights big projection mapping show, both front and the back side of the venue was projected with motion graphics during different artist section. The front door looks like a TRON building…

After the festival, we started our journey. Duomo di Milano is a place can’t be missed. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the world. I was embraced by the peaceful ambience. The stillness make me hold my breath. I was thinking how great if I can perform the work in this church…

Milan was great for shopping then and we didn’t travel much. We went to Venice and had a great time. It was the time we arrived our hostel, heavy luggage…and the hostel looks really old. And, we realised that the first floor is empty out to prevent flooding in raining season.

Venice is a beautiful place, we visited 2 contemporary museum there.

The next stop is Florence and we only have 1 day here. As suggested by friend in Venice, we must have to visit here. The Florence Baptistery is just amazing and I haven’t seen a church design like this.

And, the beautiful sunset at Ponte Vecchio, Florence.

Final stop was Rome. The quickest way to view the city is…

Biking! We travelled most famous place and we found a special cave outside the downtown area, there are a lots stages for performance and the area full of interesting graffiti. We had to miss out the weekend band show as it was time to go back HK…It was a very nice experience to tour in Italy. We will come again
